There is nothing better than UV from Nature. I like the cage to get the first Sun light of the day. If you have a real Sun loving tortoise a southern exsposure works best. It should get light all day. If you have hot days and very cold nights you might want an eastern exsposure for a early warm up. Some like to warm up last thing when temps drop fast after Sun set like Calif. One of the best things I did to pick a spot for an enclosure was to let the tortoises roam around on their own at different times of day or all day if you can, and see where they like to go. Mine being Mt.Tortoises went for the shade of a group of trees. If you can pull this off they will pick the perfect spot for your cage/enclosure. Something else my Mt.Torts. like to do in Winter is to leave the hut which remains a rather constant temp day or night and sleep out in a fairly open area and take the blunt of the low temp. for the night, BUT they pick this location in advance knowing where the first rays of the Sunlight will be the next morning. They constantly adjust for tree foliage and earth rotation. Ive seen my big Mt.Torts.take a 35F hit and they are feeding on grass four hours later! Of cource if its going to hard frezze, I lock them in the hut and turn on a heater. Vic [ Reply To This Message ] [ Subscribe to this Thread ] [ Show Entire Thread ] | ||
