Alligator lizards remind me of tiny monitors with their intelligence and appetites. What monitors you keep? I've had a yellow ackie and other "pet shop favorites" (savannas mostly) in the past. Working on getting a group of 5 red ackies from Rare Earth.

http://www.anapsid.org/gerrhont.html has a real basic care sheet. For breeding, just expose them to the same cycle you would use for a corn snake, king snake, or any north american colubrid. Depending on the species you want to work with and your location, keeping them outdoors would be quite simple, provide as large a cage as you can make of wood, screen, block, whatever. DON'T use an aquarium outdoors, they will heat up too quick and too hot, and make sure its escape proof. Provide cover to cool down, deep enough substrate for egg laying (for species that lay eggs), water dish, and plenty of bugs and even pinky mice for adults. That's the beauty of keeping native animals, simple caging and care!
