You are so right about the complexity of really knowing exactly what's what in the animal kingdom sometimes, especially with snakes. Some types can be very easy to distinguish to the subspecific level, and sometimes it is just as accurate to flip a coin in the air, unless they are known to originate from well interior of their ranges..
