If you use the ceramic heater you need to control it with a thermostat. The bulb you have now is O.K. with the 89 degree hotspot. You can cover some of the top with plastic or something to increase the ambient temp if you need to. When I said 84-86 degrees ambient, the cool end doesn't have to hit that. What you did to open the top a little to increase the heat should be enough. Its a young snake, last year or the year before from the size. As long as its eating and defecating you're good. If you can get away without having to use a thermostat and ceramic heater that's good too. Amazons are great! I produced my first litter of amazons in 2001 from a big female...26 large healthy babies!(included one runt that died)....Good Luck!
