Your ideas are decent ones. Studying any species in the wild is going to yield some excellent ideas as far as how to keep them in captivity. These guys need a ton of cover to feel secure, and most folks don't have a ready supply of small lizard feeders. If you still live in Florida/SE, you'll likely have an easier time of it. I doubt the bush species matters quite as much, so you could experiment with a smaller variety that will do better indoors; as long as it has sufficient cover to offer, I am betting it will serve just fine. Live plants are great as long as you avoid ones that've been doused in pesticides, as they really do help keep humidity levels stable.
