However, that dorsal pattern needs to be accompanied by a patternless or near patternless ventral.

If the pattern looks 'motley' on top, but the snake has the normal or near normal amount of belly checkers, it is sometimes referred to as a 'notley' because it is a not-motley.

I have two notleys.





Both those snakes have motley-like patterns, but they are not motleys because they have full expression of the belly checkers. They are simply 'oopsies' that happened during pattern formation when they were incubating.
