hhhmmmm its not that the method you were told wouldn't work. BUT, its not the ideal method to incubate reptile eggs. if your friend is doing this now the eggs are most likely ok, but they should really be using a substance called vermiculite(damp, not dripping) and the eggs should be in a sealed container (like Tupperware) to hold the humidity and you need a thermometer at the very least to properly monitor the temp.(82F-85F) If money wasn't an issue I would say bay a $50 chicken egg incubator and put the container of eggs in that just the give the hatchlings the best chance. with what they are doing now they may loose a few babies. if they are going to continue with this method make sure they keep the soil moist it will dry out fast.
