yes, it's a copperhead.



they arent a huge problem, but I understand you wanting to be venoumous snake free.



no real way to drive snakes out of your yard, but you can make your yard less inviting for them.



dont have anything they can hide under (boards, tin, rocks, mulch), ensure you dont have trash attracting any rodents, keep grass mowed/ leaves raked, and lastly ornamental plants in flower beds and such make great hideouts for snakes... good cover, moist soil, water on a regular basis.



that said, the snakes will go where they want and you might still see one, but it should cut down on the chances.



also, if you happen to have any fire ants in your area, kill them. there is a theory floating around that copperhead numbers are going up due to fire ants getting into nests of egg laying snakes. no kingsnakes hatching to eat copperheads and no other snakes being born to compete for food with copperheads who are live bearers. again it's just a theory, but who likes fire ants anyway?
