The females have to cycle first, this emits hormones, which causes her to cloacal gape(become receptive) In most species, the female will also emit pheromones which attracts males. In nature, the male will attend the female, which is stay next to her for long periods of time, and wait until she becomes receptive. In captivity its that easy leave the male in with her until she is ready. also, not all females reproduce every year, its not automatic. Same for nature. Best wishes. With other species, big fat females do tend to not reproduce as well(regularly) as smaller females. Best wishes
