Can you have too many plants?

I was just wondering if you can have too many plants in your fish tank? I started out with a few who have multiplied, and multiplied and now have quite a few plants in there. I imagine that the answer is no since they help filter the water, provide oxygen, and take up carbon dioxide and waste nutrients.
