Hi! A month ago I adopted a zebra dove that fell out of its nest. It is very friendly and about half grown. I want to keep it but I don't want to deprive it of the chance to fly about. I have a balcony and I'm wondering, if I let it get used to sitting on the balcony in its cage, and then see if it wants to free fly around to and from the nearby trees, will it know how to find its way back to my balcony? Do zebra doves have homing instincts - does anyone know? I read that ringneck doves do not. If no one knows about zebras, does anyone know if diamond doves have homing instincts - they are the same genus as zebra doves so that would provide a clue. Thanks for any help you can give me. (Or is is just too dangerous to the bird anyway for me to let it free fly? There are cats in the neighborhood and I'm not sure she developed her instincts to flee predators, since I found her when she was maybe 10 days old or so.)
