Thinking about getting a dove

I have wanted a dove for a very long time and I'm thinking about getting one soon. I've done some light reading about them but have a few questions. Are there different types of doves you can own as a pet? If so, are there some kinds that are better for first time dove owners? Also, are you able to tame them so you can hold them at all?
