>>WE ARE BREEDING OUR 7 Y.O 16.1 HH BAY LEOPARD APPY MARE WITH A BEAUTIFUL FRIESIAN STALLION. WHAT DO YOU THINK DOMINANT COLOR WILL BE? DO YOU THINK THE FOAL WILL BE COLORED? I HOPE SO!! SHES FROM THE ULRICH LINES.

Well, theoretically you have a 50/50 percent chance of getting color on the baby with that combination...however apps don't always follow theory The only way to guarantee a colored baby when outcrossing is to use a few spot or snow cap app in the breeding.

Now, as far as color goes, sounds like you're most likely going to get a black or bay (which is a black based color also). Black is dominant to chestnut, and considering the traits of the breed, I'd highly suspect the Friesian is homozygous for black, meaning even if your mare was a chestnut herself, her foal would be black based when bred to him, as he will not throw a chestnut foal. The bay, or agouti gene, limits the black pigment, so the mare will determine if the foal is bay instead of black. If she's carrying one copy of the agouti gene, you have a 50% chance of a bay, and if she's carrying two copies, you'll get a bay baby.

Does that help any?
