Actually meal is really the form of protien that you want. If it says just meat, like chicken, turkey, etc...it can mean any part of the chicken or turkey. It could mean that most of the "meat" content is feathers with some edible parts in it, listing meat is a way to get around by-product or by-product meal. Chicken meal with the word "meal" on the end is the meat, bone and organs. Usually ground up and dried into a powder then put into the food. Some excellent quality foods say just Chicken, such as Wellness and Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul. You really got to gauge the reputation of the food that you're buying to make a good call on that or call the company. For those 2 brands the reps of the companies told me that they use chicken meal, but a lot of people get confused when they see the word meal and are more likely not to buy it.
