Are there any groups trying to ban declawing in this country? I know there are quite a few countries in Europe that do. I just adopted a kitten a few months ago and the shelter that I adopted him from makes you sign a sheet saying you will NOT declaw the cat, I think thats great. No one wants their furniture ripped apart, but there are ways to get your cat to stop and use a scratch pad or anything else. I know a lot of people decided to declaw their cats even BEFORE they have a problem with scratching. I have to kittens and once in a while they stray from the scratch pad, when we catch them we tell them NO and they stop, we always pick them up and put them at the pad. But that hardley happens. My opinion is that if you worry more about your furniture than the animal you just commited to take care of, then you should give it to someone who will truely care for it and not put it through that kind of pain. But yes that is just my opinion. This is not meant to offend anyone who choses to declaw their cat, I'm just looking out for the little kitties who are just doing what they were made to do. Be cats.
