The first volume of the set of ten will have page one all the way to the right of the book when sitting on a shelf. That means that all the pages to the left of that book will not be part of the count. The same works for volume 10 having the last page is the furthest to the left when sitting in a row on a shelf.

Put ten books in a row on a shelf and you will see what I mean.
