Most of my life I've had female cats, though right now I have a male and a female. In my experience the temperament and personality has nothing to do with gender. A former cat of mine(female) was very independent and didn't take to strangers well.
My female cat, Star, is affectionate and a lap cat. She doesn't like to be picked up, though, and hides when visitors come.
My male cat, Quentin, is laid back and affectionate also. He sometimes likes to sit on my lap. He can be a brat, though, because he likes to boss Star around. He is also more outgoing toward strangers.
Anyway,I can't tell you if males or females are better. Each cat has their own personality and as a rule that isn't determined by gender. Both can be wonderful to own.

Ellen
