YIKES, my VERY long message dissapeared.

Anyway, my five cents here (abridged):

- Gender doesn't matter. Both male and female can be excellent companions, and you should be able to tell whether a cat/kitten is friendly and likes to get attention. Just try to interact with the potentials.
-I would really encourage you to consider adopting a homeless animal instead of a purebred one. There are plenty around, many of them purebred (two of mine are *purebred rescued* animals). A lot of organizations actually foster the animals in case you are wary of shelter conditions. I find that a lot of the rescued animals are very grateful to their owners, and show it!
-May I suggest as well getting an adult instead of a kitten? Kittens are small, cute and cuddly, but they all grow to adults.
