Surprisingly, another kitten could make the situation better rather than worse. A lot of people swear there is less damage with two.

She is indeed bored - does she have good climbing posts/scratching posts and lots of toys in the basement? Can she see outside - or can you rig up something so she can see outside?

This is off-the-wall, but can you get a small TV and leave it on when you are gone and she is alone? It may also give her something to look at and hear so she will not be so bored.

Finally, do get a Comfort Zone plug-in with Feliway - or two - one for upstairs and one for the basement.
