Our cat Tucker was like that. He also was a rescue kitty. We adopted him when he was four weeks old. He never liked to be held but would rather play. He was aggressive and would attack anything that moved. Including the 18 pound fat cat boots. He would knock boots over and make him cry. If we picked him up he would bite us to get down. Now that he is 3 yrs old. He has started to outgrow that. But he isn't a lovey dovey kitty. He has moments when he wants us to pet him. But he doesn't like to be held for long. He will sleep with my sister on her bed. Some kitties just like to be in your company but not touched. Have you thought of getting her a playmate? That seemed to help Tucker. He was much better behaved when he had the cats to tackle and play with, then just living with me alone. Here is Tucker as a baby.
