My cats do get jealous/curious whenever I'm on the phone or instant messaging a friend of mine on my laptop. When I'm on the phone, they both at times will get up on my lap and get in my face until I pay attention to them. When I'm on my laptop, they'll often come up and rub up against my arms, sometimes quite forcefully to get attention.

As far as making commotion at night goes, my two have learned to quiet down at night for me. Initially, I used to let them in the bedroom with me, but it got to be too much when Chessie would wake me up by knocking things off the nightstand and the 4AM wrestling matches on the bed (and me). I initially would let them in and then shoo them out when they started trouble, eventually just keeping them out of just the bedroom completely. Initially, they did give me some trouble, pounding on the door at different times of the night, even reaching up and rattling the doorknob, which waking up to the sound of that really woke me up since my place was broken into a few years ago. But they have learned to quiet down when I'm heading to bed. One thing that helped was to give them a couple treats before bed, which they eagerly look forward to.

There have been times when I've heard Chessie meowing up a storm when I've been leaving for work, but it's rare. I also give them treats before I leave for anywhere other than just to go outside, and I think that has helped some too.

Just have some patience, and things should quiet down.
