Hi,

First of all, you should not automatically assume that these behaviors do not have a physical cause. Any drastic change in behavior is a red flag indicating that a vet visit is in order. If all is well physically, then you are dealing with behavior issues.

You do refer in your post to THE litterbox. If you have only one for 5 cats that is a big problem. Ideally you should have one per cat and one extra, so you should have 6. And these boxes must be kept very, very clean if the cats are expected to use them.

The death of a family member can be very stressful for a cat, but again, you need to consider that there can also be something physical going on. When a cat avoids a litterbox there is always a reason. Please try to be patient and find out what that is before you get so frustrated with your cats.

Please make an appointment with your vet and let us know how it goes.

Regards,

PHKitkat
