I know what you mean about those clips that supposedly help keep a tablecloth where it belongs. You might have better luck with another kind of clip, such as those made for bags of chips or even plastic clothespins.
There is an option that you might consider to try to keep the cats off the table totally. It's a product called SCAT and it's an aerosol can that also contains a motion sensor. When the device detects movement it sprays air and makes a hissing noise. I have a friend who got one of these to keep cats of her desk and she says it works very well! This kind of thing might even be helpful in keeping the cats away from your CDs.
It can be very difficult to try to figure out why cats do what they do, but for some reason your CDs have become of interest to them. It is strange that they ignored them until now. I've always kept my CDs in a cabinet where they are safe from my babies.
