Oh, dear, you are in a tough situation. It seems odd that they were getting along and then stopped. I'm wondering if something happened between the two.
As to the violent reaction to the carrier and the vet, although it isnt terribly common, it does happen. A perfectly placid cat at home can turn into a terror at the vets. And some are terrified of traveling in a car. Come to think of it, did the agressive behaviour start after the vet visit? Even cats that have been together for years will act as if they are strangers after one of them has been to the vet. They pick up strange smells and cats trust their nose before their eyes.
A month isn't really that long, if it were me, I would hang in there a little longer. Maybe try introducing them again...good luck ----- PHTessie
