What kind of cat is this(newly adopted)?

My neighbor abandoned 2 cats and I adopted one of them. His name is Elwood but I'd like to know what type/breed he is. Can anyone tell me from these pictures or refer me to the correct forum?

He has striking yellow eyes and is mostly black (short fur, doesn't shed much at all) except for white on his paws and underneath his body.
