Actually, I have read where the smell of bleach can actually deter a cat from using a litterbox. Usually gentle soap and water is recommended.

I don't know about tossing the box after a few months - I do know they do get "scratchy" and the odors tend to accumulate.

You might want to try the "Cat Attract" litter for a while and see if this helps.
