Hi Tammy,
I think that a vet visit would be a good idea. If you can, bring a stool sample with you. I doubt that parasites are the problem, but you never know and it might be helpful for the vet to see what the consistancy of the stool is. If it's very hard, constipation may be the cause of your cat's behavior.
I suppose this can be food related, so maybe you can bring a can of the food with you, or a bag if it is dry. Or at least write down the ingredients to take with you.
If your cat is very nervous, perhaps something really spooked him while he was in the litterbox so he is avoiding it. In this case, antianxiety medication might be helpful on a temporary basis.
