This is a VERY common problem. One cat can smell "vet stink" on the other and becomes very upset.

In my house, this problem is cured immediately when we bathe the cat who went to the vet. However, you mentioned surgery. If your cat has stiches and is not able to be bathed yet, don't do it. If it's ok to bathe him, I recommend starting with that first and if that doesn't solve the problem, try the techniques Madame Alto suggested such as sharing the cats' scents with a towel.

Keep in mind that you probably have the smell of the vet's office on you too, which is why you're getting hissed at as well. Try to give this hissing kitty lots of love and affection as soon as you get out of the shower and/or change clothes. This will serve as a reminder that you don't always "smell like vet" and are safe.

Try not to worry too much. This problem typically lasts only a few days.
