Hi There,

It can be very serious when a cat coughs, especially if it is recurring. Coughing can be caused by feline asthma, bronchitis, heart problems, pneumonia or even a foreign body. All of these things are treatable but would tend to become worse without treatment.

I highly recommend you make an appointment and take your cat in for a exam and chest x-ray ASAP.

Some believe that cats with hairballs will cough, but this isn't true. Hairballs come from a cat's GI tract, not the lungs, so "coughing up a hairball" isn't even possible.

Please take your cat in and let us know how it goes.

Regards,
PHKitkat
