My neutered male cat, about 10 years old, started doing something odd about six months ago---when I arrive home from work or an evening out, the first thing he does is go to the litterbox and urinate.

He doesn't soil the floor, he covers up, and then immediately after doing this, he takes a drink of water from one specific water dish (there are four in the house, but he goes to this particular one only). Then, all is back to normal. My females don't do this at all.

Do you think this is some kind of territorial marking ritual---to show me that this is his turf, he marks it by urinating? Fortunately, he does it in the litter box! Not sure what the water drinking means, though.
