The knots you are talking about sound like mats. They are extremely difficult to remove.

Since the cat hasn't been cared for for a long time, a vet check is in order anyway just to be sure the cat is OK. At this time you can have the vet look at the mats and perhaps have a vet tech or on-site groomer deal with them for you.
