Ok... one thing to remember, cats not only scratch to remove the sheath on their claws, but they use it to mark territory with their scent. There are scent glands in their paws that are activated when the cat scratches. Your can't isn't scratching furniture to be contrary, but to tell the kitten that the couch/chair or whatever is "his". Foil, double-sided tape (there is a product called "Sticky Paws" for cats) or even just a throw or cover over the furniture that slips might help stop the furniture scratching. Be sure to provide a good sturdy post or cat tree so the cats do have a positive place to work their claws on - and reward them when they use it.
