Earmites can get really deep into the ear and be hard to treat with drops. And yes, the drops are irritating. Most vets have some "counter" drops that can be used to alleviate the effects of the earmites drops.

More than likey you've got a tough case of earmites or maybe even a yeast infection. The best thing to do here is to take kitty back to the vet for a really thorough ear exam, possibly with some scrapings. Not a happy thing, but necessary.
