It almost sounds as if the cat got into something toxic while outside. Usually illnesses would not progress so rapidly or be so painful so quickly. Naturally there is no way to know for sure, but I doubt seriously that it was something contagious she picked up outside. She may have had some sort of injury that couldn't be seen, or even some genetic defect that just so happened to give her problems so soon after she'd been out!

Even if it were a disease, by now your home is probably safe for another cat to live in, if you are wanting to adopt again. You might want to call the vet and ask just to be sure.
