Hi Heather,
It is very obvious from your post that you take very good care of your baby. No wonder she has made it to 19 and still has life in her!
From what I have heard the test for herpes isn't a very good one. However, I have 2 cats of my own that my vet feels have herpes and I have some suggestions.
L-lysine is an excellent idea and cannot hurt. I get 500mg tablets from Walmart and give 1/4 tablet twice daily when one of the cats has a flare-up. I crush 1/4 tablet with the back of a spoon and mix it into canned food. It crushes easily and is almost tasteless. I have taken it myself.
Another possible treatment is Interferon, which is an antiviral. I get it mixed in lactated ringers and give it using a syringe. The cats take it well.
It is possible for a cat to have both herpes and a bacterial infection at the same time. I can tell that you are very knowledgeable and are able to tell when an antibiotic is needed. My cat, Whispurr, responds well to Azithromycin and I get it flavored for her. She likes bacon better than fish.....lol
Hope this info will be helpful to you and your kitty.
Regards, PHKitkat
