As scary as this may be, it could be something either very benign or controlable. A temporary digestive upset can cause the symptoms you describe - and that is probably the best scenario. Most likely you are looking at a case of Irritable Bowel Sydrome, or IBS for short. This is hard to diagnose and treat, but isn't fatal. Once a good diet regimen is estabihed, most cats do very well - it's just the trial and error aspect at first that is a real problem.
