Hi There,

It's impossible to tell if what is going on with your kitty is serious or not, but I would take him in ASAP. If he is really wheezing, he may have feline asthma, which can be extremely serious. Asthmatic cats will often have open-mouth breathing when they are in the midst of an attack.

Your vet will probably want to take a chest x-ray and possibly start your kitty on steroids if he has asthma. There is a characteristic pattern on x-rays, known as "donuts" that you see in asthmatic cats, which is what the vet would look for.
