Hi There,

You are not being silly at all. Even though a dental is a routine procedure, there is always a risk with anesthesia.

Most 3 year-old cats do not need their teeth cleaned, so first I would be sure that your cat really needs it. If the gums are red and/or inflamed I would go ahead and schedule the dental. If there is just a bit of tarter I would wait.

Whenever a cat requires anesthesia, gas should be used. This is the absolute safest and cats wake up from it very fast. So do humans.....I had surgery last year and I felt fine when I awoke!
Plus with gas, the cat is intubated so you have an airway established in case of trouble.

My cats are my babies too

Take care, and if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

PHKitkat
