Well I took mama to the vet and it turns out she only had one kitten. What I was feeling inside her was (ready for this) poop. Her colon was all filled up and she must not have been able to go right away. The vet said it is not so strange for the body to go a little haywire after giving birth especially in such a young mother (she is only about 10 months). She has since pooped and is looking better!

But on a sad note, the kitten that she had did not make it. I don't know what happened, everything seemed to be going well. Kitten was nursing and seemed normal, but when I came home from work today I found mama had moved the kitten out of the nice warm box and behind the computer. When I moved the computer it was easy to see the poor thing wasn't moving. My guess from the fact that the baby had gook coming out of its mouth is that mama was not stimulating elimination as often as she should have. Mama is doing ok though, she still looks for the baby but is still purring, eating and playing like normal. I also unfortunately have to find a new home for the mama. We would love to keep her but she and our other cats do not get along at all. Surprisingly she tolerates the dog just fine. So she is living in a separate room away from the others and is not receiving all of the attention she really deserves. She would be much happier as an only pet I think.

Thanks again for all of your replies.
