How are you cleaning the area he has used to go as a litter box?
I know you said it was blankets/pillows ect. He may still smell the urine smell on them; if he does he is going to continue to go there.
I would try and confine him to a bathroom (like Wildcat suggested).
Only let him out when you can supervise him.
