Somewhere in the back of my mind, this is workable............
Begin with the garage shelving. Enamel it some color you like that will work as a neutral with that oak...maybe tuscan red or
deep moss (he'd probably balk at jade or bright red) or even white. Actually, white works well with that shade of oak.

Hang in there. You'll get your own house one of these days!
