I just talked to a lady about a week ago that had rescued a adult female cat. She brought her to the vet the next day and found out that the cat was a mother. The vet told her to put a halter on her and tie a "really" long string to her and that way she could go to the kittens and then they could follow her. It worked and they rescued 4 babies.
Not sure this would work for you since the mother cat is still afraid of you.
I am sure some one will know how to help.

Good Luck
Jaime
