Altho it is nothing exciting, it is still my first find of the year. It is also my coldest ever find. Despite a warm few days over the past month, our temps have hovered in the low 40's. This Saturday we had blizzard like conditions, but the ground was too warm for it to stick, we still dropped into the teens and 20's in places both Saturday and Sunday.

I am a pet sitter, so out walking one of my clients who live right across from one of the many nature preserves in the area. Walking up the road I spotted this little surviving baby. BARELY surviving. He was trying to make the trek from the swamp area to the river as best as I can tell. I counted at 5 DORs and HBC hatchlings after I found the survivor. I tossed the little peanut in my pocket so he wouldn't get run over and then after the walk released him in near the river where he was headed.

It was a mostly overcast day, temps topped out at 36 degrees. Here is to hoping the little guy made it.

I present the terribly common but totally exciting baby painted turtle (Chrysemys picta), found on a street in Mequon, WI near the Milwaukee River on a 30-degree day where snow and ice were still on the ground!

Good luck little guy!
