FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - A house full of college students got a scare they never expected — a pet corn snake, owned by no one in the home, made its way inside.

Katherine Schreiner, an NDSU student who lives in the home, said she was shocked to receive the message from her roommate.

“I don’t think any of us could have guessed that a corn snake would’ve ended up in our basement,” Schreiner said.

Schreiner said the discovery on Oct. 12 first felt like a classic college prank.

“I genuinely thought it was a prank,” she said.

Schreiner wasn’t home at the time. She said her roommate walked into her room in the basement to grab an outfit and found the snake “right there in the corner just all spread out,” and relayed it to their group chat.

The roommates called exterminators and pest control, but Schreiner said no one was able to assist. In the meantime, they put a towel under the door to keep it in the closet space.

“Somehow it escaped because then my roommate came downstairs to check on it and it was in our basement even more,” Schreiner said.

Schreiner was eventually able to get help from Fargo police to assist with the snake.

It was safely taken to the Fargo Pound as it awaits someone to claim it.

She said she’s relieved it’s over:

“Kind of relieved that it’s over and it’s going to be a great joke in 30 years, but still recovering.”
