THE STAR (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia) 08 September 05 King cobra leaves temple
Kuala Lumpur: The king cobra which drew thousands of people to the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Puchong over the past two days has left the place of worship.
Temple chairman G. Velu said that at 7.15pm yesterday, the king cobra slithered out of the glass enclosure set up to prevent devotees from venturing near the snake.
The snake made its way out of the temple and into the thick undergrowth behind the premises.
Its departure was witnessed by devotees who had come to the temple for a glimpse of the king cobra.
Velu said, since Monday when the story of the five-metre long albino-like king cobra coiling itself around the statue of the deity Amman on the main altar appeared in the newspapers, an estimated 30,000 people had visited the temple, some bearing offerings of milk and eggs.
According to vasthu sastra (the Indian form of feng shui) expert Master Yuvaraj Sowma from Chennai, India, sighting a king cobra is considered a good omen and that explains the throng of visitors to the temple.
He said the appearance of the snake signified that the 123-year-old temple has “matured and is now blessed with enhanced divine powers.”
“It is incorrect to perceive the snake as a sign of luck,” he added.
