32 sq ft is plenty of space, and if you include things like rocks and logs (or anything that can serve as a visual barrier), then the female will have a chance to escape the male.

But, it also depends on the male. I've had one male that would never bother the females, and I've got another who is always, year-round, any time of day, in the mood. To let the females have a break I'll put him in a separate pen. His mating style includes biting and ramming.

If the male proves to be too aggressive, or if the female just needs a break, you may want to consider sub-dividing the pen. I've put slots in my main pen that allow me to prop a board in the middle.
