I use about a quater of an Inch of Cypress Mulch for my Female fat tail. I have never had any problems with it for her. My Male, however, is a nut. I tried having him on cypress, and he ate it!! he wouldn't eat for two days afterward, I was so worried. then low and behold, he pooped out a little stick, and all was well. Then a few weeks later I was doing some maintenance on his cage, and I stuck him in a holding tank with no substrate except for a few scraps of mulch in a corner and he ran right over and tried to eat it. Luckily I stopped him in the act. Needless to say, this guy stays on paper towels. Good Luck with your new friend.
