40g is WAY to early. Yes they do need to be FAT inorder to have babies, they use that fat and if not in good health and FAT, they will die, or get egg bound and die. Sorry but 80 is not over kill it's being safe and not doing it to early. 50g i have seen but still puts alot of stress on them.
