I tend to believe that when snakes continuosly try to get out, like you described your snake doing, that they're telling you something isn't quite right, which you seem to have picked up on.
It could be hunger, too small of a cage, temps and/or humidity levels are off, etc... Review your setup, making sure temps/humidity are where they should be, check for mites, etc...
Once they find a weak spot in the cage they'll pursue it with vigor. If it can push the top up any at all, to where the feel it move, flex, or whatever, they'll usually keep at it unless they're absolutely content with their surroundings.
I don't know what to make of the scales. Inspect 'em for fungus to be on the safe side, if you haven't already.
