THE NATIONAL (Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea) 03 March 08 Letter: Don’t buy Indian anti-venom
I am a medical specialist and have treated many patients following snake bite, having worked at the Port Moresby General Hospital in the past. I would like to take issue with comments attributed to Manesh Patel, who claims that the Indian anti-venom is an alternative to the Australian anti-venom and is effective against “a couple of snakes found in Sandaun and plenty found in West Papua”. This is false. While the price of the Australian anti-venom is a significant issue for PNG, the Indian anti-venom was developed specifically for snakes found in India and does not have any activity against any snakes found in PNG. I am concerned that such false information may encourage people to buy this inappropriate anti-venom and this may harm patients bitten by snakes in PNG.
